Summary of ACTIONS

 

•  Approved a donation of computer equipment by Motorola, Inc. to Birdville Elementary.

 

•  Approved a donation of $2,000 by Lucent Technologies to the Richland High School Baseball Tournament.

 

•  Approved a request for a maximum class size waiver for grades one, two, three and four to eliminate the shortage of classrooms.  The total number of classes districtwide exceeding the 22:1 ratio is 23.

 

•  Approved the EXCEL Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) revisions.  The revisions entail the identification process conducted by a committee of professional educators involved in the district’s gifted/talented program.

 

•  Approved establishment of the Trade and Industrial Task Force.  This task force will explore developing a Building Trades program for the 2000-2001 school year.

 

•  Approved revisions to the Sick Leave Bank Guidelines.

 

•  Approved rescheduling of the March Board meeting from March 23 to March 28 at 7 p.m.

 

RECOGNITIONS

•  Classic Image Car Wash was recognized as a valued business partner with North Ridge Elementary.  Owners David and Sheree Hamm have donated hundreds of dollars in car cleaning services for teacher appreciation as well as made contributions to help North Ridge teachers attend the National Blue Ribbon event in Washington, D.C.

 

• A proclamation was read proclaiming the month of March “Professional Social Workers Month.”

 

•  Texas Public Schools Week activities were presented.  The theme is “BISD: Measuring Our Success!”  The community is invited to visit any campus and see the positive things happening in public education.

 

•  Christmas Providers coordinator Ginny Tigue and Hardy Sanders made a presentation honoring BISD for participating in the Christmas Providers Program.

 

•  The fine arts/athletics complex art gallery was named “The Hardy and Betty Sanders Gallery for the Visual Arts.”  Hardy and Betty Sanders have been supporters of BISD for many years.  This year is no exception.  Mr. and Mrs. Sanders have pledged a large financial donation to BISD.

 

PUBLIC HEARING

•  A public hearing was conducted on the need for before and/or after school care.

 

PERSONNEL

•  Approved three retirements and five resignations.

 

BIDS AWARDED

•  Approved bids for floor finish; kindergarten equipment; volleyball equipment and supplies; HVAC supplies; and computer printers.

 

•  Approved budget amendments.

 

•  Approved bids for the renovations to Shannon Education Center.

 

•  Approved bids for additions/renovations to Foster Village, Holiday Heights, John D. Spicer and North Ridge elementaries.

 

REPORTS

•  Special Services Consultant Patti Mullen and Speech-Language Pathologist Helen Cherry provided information about current services provided by speech-language pathologists to BISD students.
